"FEAST"

Artist statement:

I began to examine issues of consumerism through my art two years ago, when I produced a body of work based on fashion imagery, titled "Nectar." I have moved on to images of food - a clearer metaphor as it is a universal object of arousal, desire, obsession, consumption and waste. The images in my paintings are abstracted from dishes or their remains, fruit, ice cream, shrimp, etc. They suggest food, not illustratively, but in essence.

I question consumerism through an ambivalent reinterpretation of advertizing images. The work is attractive and disturbing at once, like a delicious creamy cake topped with bloody, dripping blackberries, or a soft slice of salmon pink on toxic, electric blue. The colour combinations are edgy and unpredictable. The surfaces are smooth and glossy, suggesting the printed image. The paintings are formally simple, their compositions reduced to one or two objects. The results are provocative and playful paintings, evoking ambivalence between desire and unease, comfort and tension, fascination and repellence.
